110 Years Birthday Party: Learning, Leading, and Growing

For the last century, Jarrell ISD has grown alongside the community it serves. What began as a small, close-knit school system has evolved into a rapidly growing district with new campuses, expanded programs, and an increasingly diverse student population. Yet as Jarrell ISD celebrates its 110th anniversary, Superintendent Dr. Toni Hicks says one of the district’s most important accomplishments is not simply how much it has grown, but how much of its original spirit has remained intact.

Growing with Jarrell
During her time with the district, Dr. Hicks has watched Jarrell ISD become larger and more complex while continuing to prioritize the relationships at the heart of its schools. “We have welcomed many new students, families, and staff members; opened new campuses, expanded programs, and developed stronger systems to meet changing needs,” she says. “Even with that growth, the district has continued to emphasize relationships, collaboration, and doing what is best for students.”
That growth has happened remarkably quickly. For those who have joined the district more recently, it may be difficult to appreciate just how many of the systems and opportunities now considered part of everyday life in Jarrell ISD were built in a relatively short period of time. According to Dr. Hicks, many began simply as solutions to immediate needs, with small groups of employees working together to solve problems as they arose. Over time, those efforts developed into district wide systems and programs. That evolution, she says, reflects the adaptability and persistence of the people who have built the district along the way.
Rising to the Challenge
The recent period of rapid growth has been particularly meaningful to Dr. Hicks. While an expanding district brings opportunities to broaden academic programs, extracurricular activities, student services, and career pathways, it also requires employees to continually adapt and make thoughtful decisions while continuing to serve students. “Watching our staff rise to that challenge and continue building systems for a larger, more complex district has been remarkable,” she says.

Through all of that change, however, one thing has remained constant: Jarrell ISD’s sense of community. Although the district has grown, Dr. Hicks says the personal connections that have long defined Jarrell remain among its greatest strengths. Staff members know their students, families support their schools, and the community continues to come together during both celebrations and challenges. That sense of connection is also what makes her most proud of the district’s people. She points to the resilience, flexibility, and willingness to improve demonstrated by employees throughout the district, as well as their commitment to raising expectations and creating more opportunities for students. “Jarrell ISD is a special place because of its people,” Dr. Hicks says. “Our students bring energy and possibility to the work, our staff members are deeply committed, and our community genuinely wants its schools to succeed.”
A New Century Ahead
Today, those opportunities extend far beyond the traditional classroom. Jarrell ISD continues to strengthen instruction and leadership development while expanding academic, career, fine arts, and extracurricular opportunities designed to prepare students for life after graduation—whether they are set on a path to college, a career, military service, certification programs, or other training.
As Jarrell ISD considers its next 110 years, growth will continue to shape the district. The challenge, Dr. Hicks says, will be ensuring new systems and facilities can keep pace with an expanding student population without sacrificing the relationships and sense of belonging that make the district distinctive. She sees that growth as an opportunity as much as a challenge: a chance to develop stronger programs, facilities, and support systems while creating even more pathways for students to discover their potential.
Looking ahead, Dr. Hicks hopes Jarrell ISD becomes an even stronger, more innovative, and comprehensive district—one with exceptional learning opportunities, facilities that keep up with growth, and a continued investment in educators and leaders. Above all, she hopes the district’s greatest tradition continues for another 110 years: “Most importantly, I hope Jarrell ISD remains a place where every student is known, supported, challenged, and prepared to succeed.”
